Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2020

Dear Members,

In these unprecedented times, South Dublin Credit Union has continued to deliver vital services to our members, whilst keeping the staff and volunteers safe. The Board of Directors and staff hope all members and your families are keeping well and safe.

Normally at this time of year we are preparing to hold our AGM to present the year end accounts to you. With Covid-19 impacting all our lives and due to current restrictions, we are unable to hold a physical meeting.
The Finance Bill 2020 has just been passed by the Government to permit Credit Unions to hold virtual AGMs and to extend the AGM to April 2021.

We will be doing things a little different this year and we will update you with more information as soon as it becomes available.

In the meantime, we thank you for supporting your local Credit Union and wish you all a healthy and prosperous 2021.

South Dublin Credit Union celebrates International Credit Union Day 2020
On the 15th October, 2020 South Dublin Credit Union will be joining members around the world to celebrate International Credit Union Day, an annual event to commemorate the credit union movement’s impact and achievements.
This year’s theme is ‘Inspiring Hope For a Global Community’ and South Dublin Credit Union is joining credit unions around the world to celebrate!
This year’s theme reflects how credit unions around the globe have continued to provide a high level of service to their members and demonstrated a generosity to their local communities during the COVID-19 crisis that has set them apart from other financial institutions. We are truly inspiring hope for a global credit union community. It is also a chance to be thankful for the lives and communities that have been improved by the credit union movement.
In Ireland, credit unions are more important and relevant than ever. There are now 3.6 million credit union members on the island of Ireland with 1 in every 2 people living on the island having a credit union account.
Credit unions are ethical, not-for-profit lenders that continue to provide effective and viable alternatives to financial institutions which operate for profit. Credit unions genuinely care about their members, and put them at the heart of everything they do
To mark the occasion, South Dublin Credit Union will be handing out lots of prizes to members in both branches including 2 x €50 vouchers for RIBA Restaurant in Stillorgan.

South Dublin Credit Union are proudly involved in the Loving Local Campaign to promote local businesses and community.   Here is a link to our feature of 2 local businesses in this weeks edition of the Dublin Gazette page 12.

John Hume R.I.P.

The Board, Staff and Members of South Dublin Credit Union are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of past President of the Irish League of Credit Unions, John Hume after a short illness. We offer our deepest sympathies to his wife Pat and their family at this sad time.

In addition to being a Nobel Peace Prize winner for his work on the Peace Process, John was one of the driving forces in the establishment, of the Credit Union movement in Ireland. He was a founding member of Derry Credit Union in 1960, Northern Ireland's first Credit Union. In 1964 John Hume became the youngest ever President of Irish League of Credit Unions aged 27 years.  He served in this position until 1968. He remained involved in the Credit Union movement throughout his life, despite the life changing peace-making work he was involved in. In 2001, John was made a Life Director of the Irish League of Credit Unions, only the second time this honour was bestowed.
John Hume's sense of social justice, compassion for ordinary people, and his belief in the strength of the cooperative movement was, and is, an inspiration to everyone involved in the Credit Union movement on the island of Ireland today. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will endure through the peace, he created on this island and the Credit Union movement he helped build.
Due to Covid 19, it is not possible to have a Book of Condolences, but we would ask that you remember John and his family.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

The Board of Directors have decided the maximum savings that can be held by an individual member in South Dublin Credit Union is €25,000.
Existing Savings
If your existing savings exceed this limit currently, you may continue to hold your savings balance in the credit union. You may not, however, increase your savings. If you withdraw savings and your balance is still in excess of €25,000, this balance is then your new maximum allowable.
If you withdraw savings which bring your balance to below €25,000 you may then increase them, if you so wish to the maximum of €25,000.
Many other credit unions have made a similar decision.
The Directors regret any inconvenience to members.
This new savings limit will be kept under constant review.

The GDPR is a piece of EU legislation, which will overhaul our current data protection legislation. It aims to strengthen and unify data protection for all EU individuals.
It brings with it further obligations for organisations (like your credit union) who process your personal data in order that your personal data is fully respected. Processing is basically doing anything with, even storing, your personal data. A GDPR leaflet is available here

For data protection purposes and to prevent unauthorised access to your account details through fraud, lost books, etc. South Dublin Credit Union has introduced a new receipts policy.
Our standard receipts will no longer show the outstanding balance of your savings or loans. From 25th May, receipts will show your name, account number and the details of the transaction.
How to view your account balances?
  • If you are transacting on your own account you can ask the teller for a balance receipt.
  • Complete an Account Access Form to give permission for designated person(s) to have full access to your account.
  • Register your Credit Union account online at
  • Request a statement of your account, free of charge.
We appreciate the patience and co-operation of our members in this matter.

In light of the recent Central Bank publication on Car Draws, we would like to clarify that we do not allow Directors, Supervisors or Employees enter our Members' €10,000 Cash Draw. This has always been one of the rules of our draw since it's inception. This is clearly outlined in #12 of our competition rules on the Cash Draw Entry Form:
"12. Directors, supervisors or employees of South Dublin Credit Union Limited will not be eligible to participate in the Cash Draw."

Each draw takes place in public in our Stillorgan foyer with one director and at least one member present. We use a random number generator to select the winner and this is operated by the member.

The winners' names are published on both our Facebook Page and on this website newsfeed and are available upon request at the counter.

Surplus funds generated by the cash draw are distributed to draw members via additional draws which are held on occasion and announced on this website and our FB page in advance of the draw.

Email Phishing Scam
We have been informed that there's currently an email phishing scam targeting credit union members throughout the country.
Members who have been targeted will receive an email from the email address or one similar to this. The email will inform the member of a file named "Payment Confirmation" that's been transferred to them through a site called WeTransfer, by what appears to be your Credit Union, and will be encouraged to click to download the files.
This scam is designed to collect your personal details with a view to gaining access to personal financial accounts.

You can read more about phishing scams by following this secure link.

If you receive such an e-mail please delete immediately.  Do not open any attachments or clicking links in mails from unknown sources.

Have you downloaded our new app yet?  Available free from Android and iPhone stores the app gives you access to your account at the tip of your fingertips.
Just search 'South Dublin Credit Union Ltd' in the app store and use your online login details to access your account.

The Single Euro Payments Area, (SEPA), is a European Union initiative that changes the way electronic payments in Euro are processed across the SEPA Zone countries. It simplifies the way we make and receive payments.
Making payments in Euro to any SEPA Zone country is the same as making the payment in Ireland. South Dublin Credit Union has converted all Direct Debits and Standing Orders to SEPA format, so no action is needed on your part.
Since 1st February 2014 the existing Irish electronic payment system closed down and all electronic payments are now made across the European Union through the new SEPA schemes.
You now need the BIC (Bank Identifier Code) and IBAN (International Bank Account Number) when you are setting up or making electronic payments.  These numbers can be found on your existing bank statements.
You can also log onto to access a free service to convert a single Sort Code and Bank Account number to BIC and IBAN.
